The catastrophic Lost Valley Farm mega-dairy in Morrow County put our public health and environment at risk. The state ultimately did the right thing and shut it down. Now Oregon is considering allowing a new mega-dairy on the same site -- even as our community suffers from an outbreak of COVID-19 that is impacting workers at the Columbia River Processing Plant owned by Tillamook Creamery. Raise your voice to protect Eastern Oregon's Natural resources and rural economies.
Tell Governor Brown: We don’t need more industrial-sized dairies like the proposed Easterday Farms. Oregon’s rural communities deserve economic opportunities that promote good health, clean air and water. We need a mega-dairy moratorium now!
Dear Governor Brown,
As Oregonians, we know our state is unique and special. We have a deep sense of place and want to protect our air and water, for generations to come.
The numbers are undeniable: Mega-dairies put small family farms out of business. They also foul our air and water, contaminate drinking water in rural communities, and pollute special places like the Columbia River Gorge. These industrial factory farms are major sources of pollutants like ammonia, methane, and nitrous oxide, and significantly contribute to our climate crisis.
Simply put, mega-dairies do not belong in Oregon.
In many ways you’ve led the country in state efforts to curb the worst effects of climate change. But you can’t have it both ways Governor Brown - Oregon can’t be a climate leader AND continue to allow new mega-dairies.
I urge you to enact a moratorium immediately and to direct the Oregon Department of Agriculture and Department of Environmental Quality to deny the Easterday Farms permit outright in order to protect Oregon’s family farms, air, water, special places and our future from the harms caused by industrial-scale dairies.
Thank You
