Since it opened in early 2017, the Lost Valley mega-dairy near Boardman, Oregon has regularly violated its permits and put groundwater at risk.
It is time for Governor Kate Brown and her state agencies to shut Lost Valley down once and for all. Enter your contact info and click our 'take action' link above to make your voice heard.
Background:
Within a few months of getting a confined animal feeding operation (CAFO) permit for up to 30,000 cows from the Oregon Department of Agriculture last year, lagoons at Lost Valley began overflowing with manure and untreated wastewater, threatening to contaminate drinking water supplies for local families. Trailers have overflowed with dead cows, and it has been reported that the facility has exceeded limits for bacteria in it's milk at least 60 times. The facility also began using a loophole to tap into threatened groundwater, putting senior water uses and groundwater supplies at risk.
The controversial Lost Valley operation was opposed by thousands of Oregonians, and it never should have been allowed in our state. Violations became so severe that within a year, state agencies were in court suing the owner. Despite this, the violations have continued and now the owner has declared bankruptcy in order to keep the operation open even longer and try to sell the facility to someone else.
The problems at Lost Valley are not just the responsibility of one bad actor. The blame also goes to the state agencies that allowed the facility of this scale to operate in the first place despite numerous warning signs. Lost Valley is just one of a growing number of Oregon mega-dairies that not only pollute our air and water, but make it much harder for smaller dairy farms to stay in business.
Send a message to Governor Kate Brown and the Oregon Department of Agriculture to revoke Lost Valley's CAFO permit and to prevent this poorly planned factory farm from simply being transferred to another owner.
The Oregon Department of Agriculture could make a decision on whether to revoke Lost Valley’s permit, or transfer it to another operator, any time in the coming weeks.
The time for Governor Brown to act is now. An operation of the scale of Lost Valley was a terrible idea from the start and it never should have received a permit from the State of Oregon.
